Newquay wouldn’t be the same without surf shops. Those waves rolling in from the Atlantic are a large part of what makes Newquay a great holiday destination. The surf shops cater for the people who travel from around the world to surf here. It is that meeting of cultures that helps make a great holiday atmosphere.
The Temple of Fringe
The Temple of Fringe Surf Shop is the best surf shop in the South West of England and probably a much wider area!
OK, so that’s a subjective view, but bear with me, and I may persuade you.
1. Owned and run by knowledgeable surfers who offer advice (unless closed due to big swell enticing them away).
2. Specializes in handmade boards by local skilled shapers for specific conditions.
3. Welcoming to all surfers, no elitism, treated with good humour.
4. Will order what you want or guide you to find it elsewhere.
5. Embraces the ethos of surfing’s early days in Newquay.
6. Official stockist of; ‘Lightning Bolt’, Katin and other old-school brands.
7. Home to Real Surfing Magazine.
8. Attracts well-known surfers and enthusiasts.
9. All surfers, regardless of style, are welcome to come and discuss surfing.
10. Friendly atmosphere; you’re welcome to come and chat even without buying anything.

Karma
If you’re a surfer, you already know this place, but if you’re not, it’s just outside the back gate.
Karma is a proud member of The Federation of Surfers Surf Shops.
If you want a custom-built board or need a ding repair, this is the place for you.
Dave Farrow is a specialist designer, and if you tell him where you want to surf and how experienced you are, he will advise on the best design for you.
Don’t look for designer labels and slick corporate style selling because that doesn’t fit with the ethos of Karma. This is a shop that is unashamedly rooted in the 1970s and the early days of surfing, at least as far as attitudes to commercialism. Go and chat, tell them what you want, you won’t be disappointed.
Old school brand specialist. Lightning Bolt and Katin stockist. They sell dafins, handplanes, surf mats, wompers, bellyboards, singlefins, ding repairers, and fin makers.
We bought the belly boards for the apartment here.

Custard Point
Custard Point is another of our old-school surf specialists. They have been shaping boards in Newquay since 1983; we think they may have got it about right after 40 years of practice. These guys say they are surfers and shapers, not shapers and surfers. Talk to them about what you want from your board. Where you want to use it and what skill level you are at. Listen to masters of the art and grow your skills. We have put a link to Custard Points Facebook page below but don’t expect too much information on it. These guys are more likely to be surfing the Atlantic than the net.
They are specialists in Longboards, Mini mals, and alternative shortboard shapes like Fishes, Eggs and Mini Simmons.

Dick Pearce And Friends
Dick Pearce And Friends
We love Newquay and the sea, but both are coming under pressure from people. I came here with my parents in the 60s, my friends in the 70s, my wife in the 80s and my son in the 90s. I am still coming whenever I can.
We all want this fabulous place to be around for many years, and we want our guests to keep returning.
You can help.
Bodyboarding is fantastic fun, but the cheap foam boards on sale around Newquay come at an unacceptable cost to the environment.
Please don’t buy them.
Get yourself one of the Dick Pearce boards from here or places like Karma.
We have two boards in the apartment for guests to use. If you need more, there are some for hire around the town. Not only are these boards better for the environment, but they are also far more fun and longer-lasting than the alternatives.
Visit the Dick Pearce website for easy-to-follow instructions and become a convert to sustainable bodyboarding today.
