Perranporth

outdoor activities within 30 minutes

Are you looking for outdoor activities within 30 minutes of Newquay? Why not drive down to Perranporth?
Perranporth is about 20 min away, has a massive beach and is very dog friendly -with dog showers, dog ice cream, and dogs running up and down the beach having a great time. The Tunes in the Dunes festival and other live music events take place here. Perranporth Beach is over 2 miles long at low tide, so space shouldn’t be a problem. Turn to the left for rock pools deep enough to swim in or to the right for the dunes and see if you can spot a lizard.
After a day on the beach we head for The Tywarnhayle behind the beachfront car park. It’s very dog friendly, and they serve good food.

Cornwall Heritage Aviation Museum

outdoor activities within 30 minutes

Cornwall Heritage Aviation Museum displays many historic aircraft, mainly from the Cold War period. From a  G11 Hunter to A VC10 refuelling aircraft via a Harrier Jump Jet. These are exhibits you are expected to touch, not just walk past.Do you want to fly a Hawker Hunter ? Take of from Newquay Airport and fly around Cornwall yourself? Well you can`t, but you can do it in the flight simulator.

Ask the staff about these planes, there is a good chance they flew them operationally. When you need a break, head for the fifties style cafe and shop for refreshments and souvenirs.  It’s at Newquay Airport and the A5 bus will take you there.

Screech Owl Sanctuary

5/5
outdoor activities within 30 minutes

If you are still looking for outdoor activities within 30 minutes, try the Screech Owl Sanctuary near Newquay. This sanctuary went to the top of my list of places to visit after I had looked at their Facebook page. It’s not just screech owls (Caroline Screech runs the sanctuary); they also have several different types of owls from around the world and other birds of prey. They let you handle the owls for a small additional fee with the assistance of one of the keepers. You can also play with the racoons and meerkats. Having seen a photo of someone covered in meerkats during their trip to the sanctuary – I’m sold.
