Just a few of the outdoor activities within 30 minutes of Newquay. We are sure you will be able to find plenty more.
looking for outdoor activities within 30 minutes of Newquay? Why not drive down to Perranporth?
It’s about 20 min away, it’s got a massive beach and its very, very dog friendly – there are dog showers, dog ice cream, and dogs running up and down the beach having a great time. The Tunes in the Dunes festival takes place here, as well as other live music events. At low tide the beach is over 2 miles long, so space shouldn’t be a major problem. Turn to the left for rock pools deep enough to swim in or right for the dunes and see if you can spot a lizard.
After a day on the beach we head for The Twyarnhayle, just near the main car park, its very dog friendly and they serve good food.

Cornwall Heritage Aviation Museum
Cornwall Heritage Aviation Museum displays many historic aircraft, mainly from the Cold War period. From a G11 Hunter to A VC10 refuelling aircraft via a Harrier Jump Jet. These are exhibits you are expected to touch, not just walk past.Do you want to fly a Hawker Hunter ? Take of from Newquay Airport and fly around Cornwall yourself? Well you can`t, but you can do it in the flight simulator.
Ask the staff about these planes, there is a good chance they flew them operationally. When you need a break, head for the fifties style cafe and shop for refreshments and souvenirs. It’s at Newquay Airport and the A5 bus will take you there.

Screech Owl Sanctuary
Still looking for outdoor activities within 30 minutes? Then try the Screech Owl Sanctuary is just outside Newquay (and after a quick look at their Facebook page has gone to the top of my “to visit” list). It’s not just screech owls, (Caroline Screech runs the sanctuary) there are several different types of owl from around the world, as well as other birds of prey. For a small additional fee you can handle the owls with the assistance of one of the keepers. You can also “handle” (i.e. play with) the racoons and meerkats. I just saw a photo of someone covered in meerkats during their trip to the sanctuary – I’m sold.

An on site cafe will provide a bit of chill out time if the kids get over excited.

Poly Joke (Pol-Lejouack = Jackdaw cove in Cornish) is a bit of a trek from the nearest car park and has no facilities at all. It has nothing to attract tourists. I should mention its dog friendly, has caves and rock pools, beautiful golden sands with few people on it and a sea that has managed to entice me in when fully clothed.
There is nothing to see here.

“Carnewas” or “Bedruthan Steps” is a dangerous beach. From the car park, where there is a visitor centre and a café, head along the path to the steep steps, these will take you down to a little beach that most people are happy to stay on, but if you head to the right on a falling tide you will find paradise.
You can’t swim here, as there is no lifeguard service and the currents can be dangerous, but on one occasion all three of us were in the water in just our underwear, whilst the dog barked, to tell us how stupid we were being from the beach. Watch that tide because it will come back in and this place is so beautiful you risk getting cut off as you want to stay just a few minutes more. Check tide times and set an alarm! Don`t tell anyone about this place as its better with fewer people there.
THE STEPS TO THE BEACH ARE CLOSED AT THE MOMENT DUE TO STORM DAMAGE
