Selkies

5/5

Tucked away in the heart of Newquay lies a rare gem among the bars and pubs that dot the town.Meet Debbie and Steve, the heart and soul of Selkies. Unlike many others, they aren’t bound by red tape or company manuals. They’re quick on their feet, ready to adapt and welcome you with open arms. Their knack for spotting talent is uncanny – don’t be surprised if you find yourself enjoying the tunes of a street performer who’s been whisked right off the pavement.
Selkies might not fit the typical mould; it’s not just a pub or a bar. It’s a place where good food isn’t just a side note – it’s a tale of flavours that awaken your taste buds, especially their legendary grazing platters. And the local talent that graces its stage? It’s not just a performance; it’s a celebration of the sounds that Cornwall has to offer.

But that’s not all. Selkies wears many hats. It’s a hub for local crafts and gifts from where you can take home a piece of Cornwall’s heart. And if you’ve ever dreamed of crafting the perfect cocktail, Selkies doubles as a night school where you can learn the art of mixology from a master.

Myth and Legend

Now let’s address those Selkies – the elusive, shape-shifting creatures of Celtic lore. You won’t find them mingling at the bar as they spend their time in the harbour, begging for fish in their seal form. But the Celtic spirit is woven into Selkies’ fabric. Here, you’re more than a customer; you’re a guest, and the hospitality flows as naturally as the tide.
So, leave the ordinary at the door and step into Selkies – a place where the genuine warmth of Cornwall meets a touch of magic and where Debbie and Steve ensure your time is nothing short of memorable.

Bars And Pubs

On The Rocks is our local – free pool tables; patio overlooking the bay; Sport on TV; excellent music; dog and people-friendly. Although they do not serve food, we have had curies delivered in.
Dogs must be on a lead in On The Rocks. Nobody says it should be attached to a person!
Mainly locals in here, and the staff may be playing Jenga or pool, but it’s a great night out. Keep it local with Dead Mans Fingers Rum, and you will have a night to remember.
Facebook can not help you with updates on this pub as they only post about once every year.
On The Rocks is a fantastic local pub, but it also has the advantage of being next door but one to the apartment.

Whiskers

5/5
Newquay Bars

Voted Newquay’s number one bar on TripAdvisor, this is a fun and friendly live music venue.
Whiskers completed a massive renovation project in 2021 with the stated aim of becoming the best live music venue in the South West. They also say they now have the best sound system in Newquay. Check out the LED light-up dance floor or chill in the bright pink VIP sofa area.
All ages are welcome, and dogs are welcome as well. Justly proud of its eco credentials, serving craft beer and cider alongside its signature cocktails. Whiskers are also honoured to be listed in The Lonely Planet Guide to England.

Tom Thumb

5/5
Tom Thumb
Newquay Bars

Tom Thumb is a rather unusual bar in Newquay; it’s small, with a friendly atmosphere and a unique set of rules. Groups are limited to a maximum of 8 people, and the establishment doesn’t allow fancy dress, food service, sports TV, or children after 9 PM. These rules ensure a relaxed and enjoyable evening. With a wide selection of drinks, including beers, wines, spirits, and expertly crafted cocktails, free from outside disturbances that can detract from the experience in other, less refined bars.
If you’re driving later, don’t worry – Tom Thumb offers a fantastic selection of adult alcohol-free cocktails. The bar also hosts events such as wine tastings and cocktail-making masterclasses. Give Tom Thumb a try for a laid-back and enjoyable night out.

The Sailors

The Sailors is a must in any list of bars and pubs in Newquay. For generations of holidaymakers, the Sailors has been one of the key venues. It’s one of the Newquay landmarks that you’re likely to be chatting about when you get home. I have been coming here to drink and party for over 40 years and have some great memories of the place.
At the front, you can watch the world go by or sit at the back and watch the sea.
The Sailors serves “Pub Grub” from 11 a.m. to 9 pm.
Dog friendly and family-friendly up to 9.30 PM.

The Red Lion is the furthest from the apartment of any of the other bars and pubs but well worth the trip.

Overlooking the Harbour, on the way up towards Fistral, The Red Lion is the local pub, but holidaymakers are also very welcome.

It’s dog-friendly, offering free dog treats at the bar, so Mr Pringle, our canine consultant, approves. It’s also family-friendly but with a 10 pm cut-off for minors.

They serve from a good pub menu and have regular, live music in the evenings. Check out their Facebook page for events and offers, or the boards outside also list events.

The Slug and Lettuce is on the left as you come up the slope from Towan Beach. It was fully refurbished, at a cost of £400,000, in 2020 and now offers a wide range of food and drink options.
Why not try an afternoon tea complete with cocktails or mocktails? It’s the perfect way to end a morning of surfing at Towan Beach.
The Slug And Lettuce is family-friendly until 10 pm and has an outside area where you can sit back, relax, and watch the world go by.
